Ophthalmologists (eye doctors and surgeons) treat eye and vision conditions, eye disorders and diseases, and eye injuries
An ophthalmologist is a medical or osteopathic physician who specializes in eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists can perform routine eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, dispense medications, diagnose and manage eye conditions and diseases, treat ocular emergencies, and perform surgeries and procedures. Many ophthalmologists pursue advanced study in complex areas such as glaucoma, retina, pediatrics, oculoplastic surgery, or neuroophthalmology, and are involved in scientific research on the causes and cures for eye diseases and vision disorders.
